The First Tee of Austin

The First Tee of Greater Austin (www.firstteeaustin.org) a 501(c)(3) non-profit, youth-mentoring  program. Started in 1999, The First Tee is committed to enriching the lives of young people in the greater Austin area through the game of golf, using a national, research-based curriculum that teaches important life skills. The program offers youth from all backgrounds a safe place to go during after-school hours where they can participate in structured activities to help them grow and learn. The life skills curriculum teaches interpersonal skills, goal setting, self-management and resistance skills. The programs serve a diverse population of youth; 14 schools in the east Austin area surrounding The First Tee's Harvey Penick Golf Campus have been identified as their community service target. However, students from some 85 schools in the greater Austin area participate in the programs. Scholarship dollars are used to fund at-need students from the east Austin area. In 2009 over 800 Austin area kids were served with 30% of them receiving 100% subsidy to participate in the program. The five year goal of the program is to serve over 5000 Austin area youth and continue to financially support at least 30% of those participants
