Avery Ranch one of Austin’s newest courses, its part of the Avery Rancy residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved  and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brush Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indian’s and robbers, who were drawn to the beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.

The course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.

Hole #7 doglegs left and features two scenic carries – one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right and the native cacti to the rear.

Hole #13 is considered one of the best Par 3’s in the area. The 161 yard hole features water on the right side, impressive towering oaks in the back and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge and the hole features a bail out are in the case of a miss.

This course, designed by Jeff Brauer and opened in 1991, offers one of the more enjoyable experiences for the average golfer. The par 72 layout is only 6,500 yards and is void of a lot trees, making it more of a links style course. Mounding is prominent around the multi-tiered greens, making it difficult for ups and downs after approach miscues.

Two holes stand out, both on the back nine. The par 5 #12 is reachable in two at only 488 yards, but water guards the landing area off the tee and the green has three levels. Hole #17 is a fun par 3, playing 195 yards over a lake.

Keep in mind that the trick to Bluebonnet is the greens. Pay attention to the pin-placements and try to hit the club that will get you to the correct quadrant of the green.

City of Austin: Butler Pitch and Putt Golf Course
201 Lee Barton Dr.
Austin, TX 78704
www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/jimmyclay.htm

Austinite Douglas Kinser approached the city in the late 1940’s about improving the poor conditions of the land occupied by the former Butler Brick Company. His wish was granted and from the former clay mine he created a 9-hole course that now graces a serene, landscaped setting just south of Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin. You can still see where the mine walls dropped down as Hole #1 and #2 play down into the mine bottom. The overall course design is really simple and most of the holes require only a wedge. This includes the signature #7 which involves a pitch shot over a pond that fronts the green.

The central location of the course is ideal, making it the perfect place to kill some time on a spring day. Barton Springs, South Lamar and downtown are all within a few minutes driving distance so there are plenty of post round entertainment options. The green fee is $6 and the historic old clubhouse boasts a Hole-in-One Wall of Fame, old clubs in case you need to borrow a wedge and putter and remnants of a shady murder that occurred in the Pro Shop in 1953.

Jimmy Clay and Roy Kizer are side by side municipal golf courses owned and operated by the City of Austin. In addition the city recently opened the Joe Balendar 9 hole short course adjacent to the driving range.

The recently renovated Joe Finger design originally opened in 1974 and incorporates Williamson Creek in the layout. The course is relatively flat and very easy to walk. “Clay” as it is known to the locals has a nice mixture of tight, tree lined holes and holes where you can “grip it and rip it.” The par 4, 18th hole is one of the best finishing holes in Austin and even a two stroke lead sometimes does not seem like enough. With a pond on the left and a cluster of trees on the right a good tee shot is a must, the second shot is to an evalated green guarded by water short left and right.

“Kizer” as it is affectionally called by the local’s is the City of Austin’s newest golf course opening in 1994. It is part of the 36 hole Jimmy Clay – Roy Kizer golf facility. Kizer is more of a links golf course, where a premium is put being able to keeping the ball below the wind and bumping and running the ball onto the green. The Kizer course sits on an old water treatment facility and was transformed by Randy Russell, who had over 80 acres of lakes and marshland as his disposal when he laid out the 200 acres. Like its neighbor Jimmy Clay, Roy Kizer is also a walker friendly golf course.

Formerly the Golf Course at Circle C. The Jay Morrish designed course opened in 1993 and is located just 20 minutes south of downtown Austin. Considered one of the best public courses in the Austin area, golfers are drawn to Grey Rock’s proximity to the city as well as the serene setting.

Morrish’s design is also popular because of its mostly flat wide-open layout which makes it fair for the laboring hack who struggles to keep it in the fairway. The generous fairways are lined with beautiful oaks and the large undulating greens provide welcome targets. Water is not a big factor coming into play on only 4-5 holes.

The back nine is known for its numerous dogleg’s. Every hole (even the par 3’s) bends at least a little giving the advantage to the shot-makers over the long knockers.

The course was designed by the PGA TOUR design services and in addition to the nine hole course the facility also has a three hole short course, driving range and practice putting and chipping greens. The par 30 course is fun and challenging for players of all skill levels. Both Little Walnut Creek and Walnut Creek run through the course providing extra challenges on Holes #2, #6 and #7. The HPGC is the perfect course for a quick nine during the week or weekend.

Back around 1900, when the greater Austin area was only home to about 25,000 residents, Harvard Law School graduate and lifetime Austinite Lewis Hancock organized one of Texas’ first formal country clubs, Austin Country Club.

The first 9-hole course, now known as Hancock Park, featured sand greens and a tiny two-room framed clubhouse. The club stayed put for half a century, noted for the presence of Harvey Penick. Then after a huge club debate, the facility was moved to Riverside Drive in East Austin. From there it made it another 35 years before moving to its current Davenport Ranch location.

The current ACC layout, designed by Pete Dye, rests on the shores of Lake Austin, did not veer from his usual method of creating an impressively difficult track using his trademark railroad ties, deep pot bunkers and huge undulations.

The opening holes play along Lake Austin and are most of a links style design. Afterwards the Hill Country takes effect, featuring canyons, ravines, creeks.

Originally located is a remote part of the Hill Country that has now been absorbed by the Austin city limits, Balcones dates back to 1956 when it was only a 9 hole layout. Today the club boasts two totally distinct tracks.

The orginal 9-holer was transformed into the easier Balcones Course. With water on only two holes (15 and 16) it’s just a friendlier layout and plays fast. The signature hole #6 a 456 yard par 4 is highlighted by a magnificent old oak tree in the fairway.

In 1978, the club opened the more challeging Spicewood Course, featuring spectacular views amongst the more frequent elevation changes. On the front nine hole #3 is fun, featuring a tricky tee shot through a tunnel of oaks and a creek that cuts across the fairway. On the back, hole #11 is tough because of its 595 yards – virtually impossible to get there in two, depending on the wind is sometimes hard to get there in regulation.

Great Hills rests atop one of the highest points in the Hill Country, featuring a Don January and Billy Martindale design that rolls through scenic hills and canyons.

Lakeway opened in 1963 with two Leon Howard designs Live Oak and Yaupon. The Live Oak Course was the first to open and is closest to the lake with holes #5 and #6 just off the marina. The course is walker and golfer friendly,  the relatively flat course has short distances between greens and tees and only has one bunker on the golf course. The course is not long but is challeging because of the many tree lined fairways and dogleg holes that require alot of “risk-reward” strategy off the tee.

The Yaupon Course came along 12 years after Live Oak and was particularly challeging for Howard’s return to the area because of the rocky terrain. Due to the lack of soil, construction of the course required 100,000 cubic yards of soil to be dredged from the lake bottom. A few holes offer views of the lake and the dramatic elevation changes make it more difficult then the Live Oak G.C. in judging distances.

The Hills opened in 1981 with a signature Jack Nicklaus design that is consistently ranked as one of the finest golf courses in the state. Home to a Champions Tour event for three years 2006-2008 it was consistently ranked as one of the pro’s favorite courses on tour.

When building the course, Nicklaus incorporated Hurst Creek throughout the layout that includes a spectator waterfall on the signature 7th hole. While the tee shots are challenging, the course demands solid approach shots, with narrow openings to greens that have a lot of subtle undulations.
Par 72 – Tees:  Back 6,954 (72.6/132), Middle 6,306 (70.0/126), Forward 5,123 (69.4/124)

Recently opened in 2002, the Flintrock Falls course now enables the members the chance to play a second Nicklaus design, this one co-designed by Jack and Jack II. Hurst Creek comes into play prominently again and like The Hills course, Nicklaus had plenty of live oaks, cedars and the natural Hill Country landscape at his disposal. The signature hole is #11 highlighted by a creek and a natural waterfall.

Barton Creek/Crenshaw Cliffside Golf Course

Austin, TX 78735

Unlike the flashier Fazio Course, Crenshaw’s work at Barton Creek typifies his traditionalist style, a tribute to his dedication as one of the game’s great historians. There’s more of a natural fee to playing on his courses and more pure golf enjoyment for the layman because he actually has a chance to hit the wide fairways and monstrous greens.

In fact, the highlight of the Crenshaw course is the massive greens, which make it easier to reach in regulation, but often leaves the player with putts of 100 feet or more.

The Hill Country views, while not as dramatic as on the Fazio layout, are still prevalent on this track. The most scenic is the 125 yard 17th hole, which plays over a huge valley into a green that slopes toward the drop-off.

Environmentally friendly like the other three courses, this one was designated as a Certified Audubon Sanctuary System course (one of the first in the country), which speaks to the level of care that went into preserving the natural environment.

At Fazio’s disposal was the Short Spring Branch Creek, a scenic limstone-bedded feature that rolls through the course and enhances the oak and sycamore laden fairways. The views on the course are just as tremendous as the others.

The former Hidden Hills C.C. opened in 1986 and was bought by Barton Creek in 1989 and actually resides 25 miles west of the resort itself. The Arnold Palmer designed course overlooks Lake Travis, with plenty of panoramic views of the lake and surrounding countryside.

While Palmer’s design is surprisingly flat considering the terrain, hole #1 is an anomaly as it drops over 70 feet down to a tree lined fairway. The remainder of the front side is dominated by holes that require forced carries, including holes 2-4 that are all forced carries over water hazards. Hole #3 plays 162 yards over water and hole #4 doglegs downhill over water off the tee. Hole #6 is 565 yards, but hole #7 is the toughest hole playing 403 yards, doglegging right into a canyon off the tee forcing a lay-up. The longish approach must carry the canyon to the green surrounded by trees.

The forced carries continue on the back nine, highlighted by the popular 201 yard, 11th hole, considered one of the most beautiful holes in Texas with its scenic tee shot over a pond and creek lined fairways. The view on hole #14 is nice as well and you’ll have a added bonus since there are two greens on this hole (the one on the right is shorter but smaller).  For excurisons to Barton Creek do not forget about Lakeside, it’s worth the trip.
