McCaffrey, Barfield Tied for Lead in Harvey Penick Invitational

Mike McCaffrey, who won the Texas State Mid-Amateur Championship last week, and Neal Barfield both overcame afternoon swirling winds to shoot 69 and take a five shot lead in the 74th Harvey Penick Invitational.   McCaffrey and Barfield were only two players to shoot sub par scores on the difficult Austin Country Club, Pete Dye designed golf course.  The winds made it difficult to pull the right club and the greens, although excellent surfaces and in excellent condition, were speedy and challenging.

Texans dominated the leaderboard with Patrick Christovich, the 2011 Lousiana Mid-Amateur Champion, and Brian Harris of Indiana being the closest out of state contenders with scores of 74.  A group of players at 74-76 contained some of the better mid amateurs from across Texas, including several players from Austin and San Antonio who will be playing in the Rudy's I-35 Cup matches between Austin and San Antonio at Sonterra Country Club October 28-29.

The senior division, which played in morning rains and then wind, is lead by Jay Pumphrey of Georgetown, who posted 73. Several players are in close pursuit with scores of 74-76. 

Billy Clagett shot 74 to lead the Super-Senior Division.
