The field at the Southern Amateur is very steeped in talent and features some of the best from the college ranks as well as mid amateurs. It is now open to players worldwide; it had been limited to residents and students from the 14 states that comprise the Southern Golf Association. Exempt invitations are being reduced to 60, and the remaining berths in the 156-player field will be gained through local qualifying.
Entrants must have a U.S. Golf Association handicap index of 3.4 or better. Past champions of this prestigious event include Ben Crenshaw, Lanny Wadkins, Hubert Green, Bob Tway and Davis Love III. The Championship will be conducted at stroke play for 72 holes. There will be 156 players at the championship site to begin play, some of which will be exempt and some that have had to qualify at a regional qualifying site. After 36 holes the field will be reduced to the low 66 scorers and ties for the final 36 holes of play.
