Concordia Texas receives at-large bid for NCAA Championships
INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time in program history, the Concordia University Texas men’s golf team qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships, it was announced on Monday afternoon. The Tornados, who received an at-large bid, were one of 41 teams to qualify for the event, which will take place May 13-16 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
“I’m very excited,” Concordia Texas head coach Greg Sigler said after learning of his national tournament berth. “It has been a rough past couple of weeks waiting to find out if we were going to get in. I’m glad to see our name up there.”
The Tornados, who are ranked ninth in the Golfstat.com poll and 13th in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll, picked up the at-large bid after finishing third at the American Southwest Conference Championships two weeks ago.
Concordia posted a 303.59 stroke average during the year, which was good for third in the ASC. The Tornados won three tournament titles and recorded a trio of runner-up finishes.
Sigler will send the same five players who competed in the ASC Championships – juniors Jack Cersosimo and Bradley Goodlander and freshmen Brantley Blasingame, Josh Hernandez and Mason Raine.
“I expect this team to go out and compete and play well,” Sigler said. “We went to the East Coast earlier this year and played well in South Carolina. I expect them to do the same in this tournament.”
The four-round tournament is scheduled to tee off with the first 18 holes at 7 a.m. (ET) on Tuesday, May 13. The second round will take place the following day, while the top 15 teams will make the cut and play the final two rounds on Thursday and Friday
