Robert Evans won a three hole playoff with Steve Paterson and Cory Brown to capture the Chester Cup at Great Hills Country Club.
Evans, who shot 72 in the first round, made a charge on the back nine and seemed to have the tournament well in hand standing on the 18th tee. But after pushing a drive right on 18, he attempted to play a shot to the fairway. The ball encounter a rock that sent it into the left hillside. He then suffered a series of mishaps that led to a triple bogey and an even par round of 71 for a two day total of one over par.
Paterson, who posted the low score of the day with a two under par 69, narrowly missed a birdie putt on the last hole. That gave him a two day total of one over par 143.
Cory Brown posted a second round even par 71 to go with a first round 72 to earn a spot in the playoff.

The playoff commenced on number 10, a 185 yard par three. Brown hit first and laced an iron shot to within 12 feet of the hole. Paterson and Evans also hit the green. All three players narrowly missed their birdies and they went back to the tee to play the hole again.
Brown hit it to 10 feet, Paterson narrowly missed the green to the left. Evans hit the green to about 30 feet. All three parred the hole.
The play off moved to the par four 8th hole where Brown missed the fairway left then hit the green about 30 feet right of the hole.
Paterson played next and hit the fairway with his driver.
Here is the swing sequence for Paterson’s tee shot. (Click on any photo to enlarge it, then use the back button to return to the story)
The camera angle is slightly off but it gives an overall look at the swing that has resulted in Paterson being one of the leading amateur in Austin over the past several seasons and propelled him to a recent high finish in the Texas Amateur in Dallas. He then played his second onto the green about 30 feet short of the hole and putting uphill to a tricky hole location.
Paterson had been playing well all day, hitting a number of quality shots and putting well. The rough, which was deep due to recent rains, contributed to a couple of bogeys on the back nine.
Evans was the last to play from the tee. He powered a drive down the right side of the fairway just past Paterson’s ball. Here is the swing sequence from that shot. That left him with 135 yards to the green.
Evans played his second shot from the fairway with Brown’s ball about 30 feet to the right of the hole and Paterson about 30 feet short.
He played the shot to about eight feet right of the hole.
Now it became a putting contest with Evans having an advantage of the shorter putt. Paterson putted and gave it a good run missing slightly right of the hole. Brown was next and made a bold effort but missed low.
That left Evans with a putt to win the tournament that he had earlier let slip from his grasp on the 18th. He sized up the putt and rolled it in to capture the title. This is the second win of the season for Evans, who earlier captured the Spring Championship at Morris Williams where he birdied the last two holes to win. He’s playing well.
Here is the final putt. Congratulations to Robert Evans on his victory and to Steve Paterson and Cory Brown on their excellent play.
The Great Hills Country Club hosted a well run tournament in spite of difficult weather conditions. The course was in good shape with the greens rolling well and lots of healthy rough. Congratulations to all the staff and members at Great Hills Country Club.
