Reese Ramsey birdied the 20th hole of his match to win and advance to the round of 32 in the U.S. Junior Amateur being played at the Colleton River Plantation Club in Bluffton, South Carolina.
In regulation play Ramsey was three under par but his opponent also played well. Ramsey was one up at the turn. His opponent, Michael Sanders birdied 12 and 14 to go one up in the match.
After Sanders bogeyed the 15th, the match was square. Ramsey birdied 16 to go one up but a bogey on the 18th left the match all square. After both players parred the 19th hole, Ramsey made birdie on the par 5 20th hole to win the match.
The round of 32 commences today after the round of 64 matches are completed. They were delayed by weather during yesterday’s play and are finishing today.
Kristen Gillman, the Lake Travis High School golfer who is the defending U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion was defeated 2&1 in the round of 64 at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.
That leaves Ramsey as the only Austin player still participating in a U.S. Junior Tournament. There were eight Austin based players that qualified to participate in either the U.S. Girls’ Junior or the U.S. Junior Amateur.
