Visiting Austin

Austin Texas is one of the best cities for golf in the United States.  In fact, Golf Digest rated “The Best” City in America for golf in 2008 based on its climate, total number of courses per capita, ratio of public access to private courses, rich golf history, and cost value for playing.  Austin has it all for all anyone who is a fan of golf.

Golfers in Austin enjoy 300 days per year of sunshine with an average yearly temperature of 74.6 F.  The golf course to population ratio is 1 to 13,000.  (San Antonio is 1 to 24K)  With world renowned course designers including Fazio, Nicklaus, Palmer, Crenshaw, Dye, Trent  Jones, Bechtol, Moorish,  and  Hills.  There are over 40 courses in the Greater Austin area ranging from historic municipal layouts, premium vibrant daily fees, exclusive private clubs and world class resorts   Austin is long on course quality as well as quantity. 

Austin has a rich golf history.  Harvey Penick is Austin’s most famous son.  Mr. Penick’s contributions to the game of golf are best illustrated in his best – selling sports book, Little Red Book.   Mr. Penick’s  students include many of the greatest players not the least of which were a pair of young  Austinites named Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite.  Austin is the birthplace of the PGA Champions Tour.  The first official Senior event, The Legends Of Golf, was held in 1979 at Onion Creek Country Club in South Austin.  Austin has played host to several LPGA Tour and Champions Tour events since that time.  Many  touring professionals call Austin home including, Crenshaw, Kite, Tom Jenkins, Rich Beem,  Joe Ogilvie, Bob Estes,  JL Lewis, Wes Short, Cindy Figg Currier , and Omar Uresti.
