Crowded Leader Board After Day One
Six Players Tied for the Lead

(Austin, TX) – The 102nd Texas Amateur Championship is being held at Austin Country Club and after one round of the play the course is providing a stern test for the players.  The morning wave played in relatively mild conditions with a slight breeze, while the afternoon wave faced extremely hot temperatures and strong winds.  Even though the players went off in two waves the scores stayed very consistent throughout the day as players struggled with the difficult hill country layout.  Only 13 players were able to shoot rounds of par or better, but 30 players are within 3 shots of the lead.

A host of college players find themselves tied for the lead after firing 1 under par rounds of 71.  Among those players tied at the top is Kelly Kraft, the 2008 Texas Amateur champion.  Kraft got off to a great start with 4 birdies on the front nine, but three bogeys to start his back nine stopped his momentum.  Curtis Reed of Castroville had 3 birdies and 2 bogeys in his round of 71.  Reed, the 2010 State Boys Junior champion and current University of Houston golf team member, made his 3 birdies in his final 5 holes to move to the top of the leader board.  Stetson McMillan, a member of the Stephen F Austin golf team, also carded 3 birdies and 2 bogeys in his round of 71.

Also in the group of first round leaders are Nathan Anderson, Andrew Presley, and Kolton Crawford.  Anderson of Burleson was 2 over par after a double bogey on his second hole, but climbed up the leader board with 3 birdies to finish at 1 under par.  Presley made consecutive birdies on holes 3 and 4 to offset his lone bogey in his round of 71.  Crawford, who is set to attend the University of Arkansas in the fall, made 2 birdies and 1 bogey to tie for the lead.  Six players are just one shot off lead after first rounds of even par 72.

The University of Texas golf team is well represented with 5 current or future players in the field.  Cody Gribble finds himself just 1 shot off the lead after an opening round of even par 72.  Gribble jumped out to an early lead at 4 under par, but stumbled with a quadruple bogey on number 8 (his 17th hole).  Johnathan Schnitzer, the runner-up in the 2009 Texas Amateur, had a wild round of 77 on day one.   Alex Moon struggled with an opening round of 79.  Incoming freshman Tayler Termeer carded a 75 and Kramer Hickok fired 77 in the first round.

The championship is open to male amateur golfers who belong to a facility that is a member of the Texas Golf Association, have a GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 6.4 and are current Texas residents. Of the more than 700 entries received this year, 41 players were fully exempt from qualifying based on past performance. To determine the remaining 103 spots in the 144 player starting field, 18 hole qualifyings were held at 19 sites across the state from April 17 – June 6. The format for the 2011 Texas Amateur is 72 holes individual stoke play. All contestants will play 18 holes on both Thursday, June 16, and Friday, June 17. After 36 holes the field will be cut to the low 54 scores and ties heading into the final two rounds on Saturday and Sunday.

The Texas Amateur has a long and storied history dating back to the first playing in April of 1906 at Dallas CC.  H.L. Edwards, for whom the memorial trophy is named, won the inaugural championship.  Edwards was also the association’s first president and a founder of both Dallas CC and Brook Hollow GC.  War has been the only thing to stop this championship over the years.  The Texas Amateur was not played in 1918 due to World War I and again from 1943-1945 during World War II, making 2010 the 101st playing. The player that is lucky enough to earn the H.L. Edwards trophy this year will join an impressive list of past champions that includes Ben Crenshaw, Bruce Lietzke, Mark Brooks, and Scott Verplank.
