2011 Hannon Cup Matches

Georg HannonThe 15th Anniversary Hannon Cup Matches will commence on September 18th with the pre-match dinner and opening ceremomies at U.T. Golf Club on Sunday Septemper 18th, followed by play on Monday, the 19th and Tuesday the 20th.   The Ryder Cup format will consist of foursomes and fourball matches on Monday and singles matches on Tuesday.  The featured speaker for the opening ceremonies will be Joe Black, author of the book, A Few Good Golf Stories.

The Hannon Cup Matches are one of the activities hosted by the Hannon Cup Association and they are designed to provide good competition as well as recognize Coach Hannon's contributions to the Austin golfing community. Hannon Society members will join the Hannon Cup Association Steering Committee in welcoming the Hannon Cup Team Members.  Members of the PAR rules group in Austin, who will officiate the matches,  will be present at the dinner and matches.

The Hannon Cup Matches, along with the George Hannon Junior Invitational, scholarships offered by the Hannon Cup Association,  donations to the Austin Junior Golf Academy are all part of the efforts by the Association to promote and grow the game of golf in Austin. For more information on the Hannon Cup Association and how to get involved, click here

The University of Texas Golf Club is an ideal venue for the matches in terms of the quality of the golf course, the excellent support of all the staff for the event and the prominent display of U.T. traditions. The golf course is in excellent shape and will be played at about 7100 yards for the competiton.

Pictures of U.T. Golfers that played for Coach Hannon are prominently displayed in the locker room and in the teaching academy.  Names such as Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Justin Leonard, Omar Uresti, David Gossett, Bob Estes, Brandel Chamblee, Ed White, Morris Williams, Harvey Penick, and George Hannon appear on lockers and in the photographs and provide an overview of the U.T. golfing traditions from the time that Harvey Penick coached for U.T. through Coach Hannon's tenure at U.T. and into the present.  One cannot help but feel a sense of tradition, accomplishment and appreciation for those who have accomplished so much in the world of golf.

Over the 14 years of the Hannon Cup Matches, the amateurs have an 8-6 lead in the series.  The 2011 teams feature accomplished players on both sides and the compteition, although respectful and friendly, will be spirited.  Both teams include veterans of Hannon Cup Matches as well as some rookies to these matches.  Shown below are the player profiles for both teams.
