Rudy’s I-35 Cup – Austin vs. San Antonio Commences Friday

The third annual Rudy's I-35 Cup will commence Friday.  The Rudy's Cup includes a Rivalary before the Matches, a Gala Dinner and Opening Ceremonies and  a Ryder Cup formatted competition between the best amateur golfers in Austin and San Antonio.

The Rivalary before the matches features a competiton between 3 person teams in a scramble format that includes teams hosted by businesses in Austin and San Antonio.  This portion of the event is being played at Canyon Springs and Sonterra South in San Antonio on Friday. 

Significant charitable contributions have been achieved by the Rudy's I-35 Cup, with Habitat for Humanity and the First Tee being the recipients of the charitable contributions.  Last year, $80,000 was raised and contributed to these charities by the Rudy's I-35 Cup Event.  Golf San Antonio and Austin Amateur Golf are the coordinators for the event.  Congratulations to those organizations for their successful efforts toward this event.

Friday evening, all the contestants from the scrambles convene at Sonterra Country Club for the opening ceremonies and dinner.   Dignitaries from San Antonio will welcome the participants, veterans will be honored by the San Antonio Spurs basketball team and the players on the Austin and San Antonio teams will be presented.   Announcement of the pairings for the Foursomes competition on Saturday morning will conclude the evening..  The Ryder Cup portion of the event will be held on the Sonterra South Golf Course designed by Perry Maxwell. 

Austin and San Antonio will field 14 players on each team to compete for the Cup.  San Antonio leads the series 2-0.  Austin Team Captain Mike Allen has commented that the team is motivated to get a win and is optomistic about Austin's chances this year. 

Eligibility for the Austin team is determined by a year long points race hosted by Austin Amateur Golf. A series of tournaments are held in the Austin area and players receive points toward a number of categories, including the Rudy's Cup,  by competing in these tournaments.  Player profiles and complete information about the 2011 points rankings are available on the Austin Amateur Golf website.  Click here to view the program and player profiles.

The Austin team is captained by Mike Allen and he is joined by Ben Carter, Bryan Kennedy, Steve Paterson, Vince Brunssen, Mark Baldree, Steve Trafton, Chris Hartenstein, Robert Evans, Aaron Kaiser, Peter McGibney, Kody King, John Perez and Drew Bell.
