Professionals Win Hannon Cup 14.5 to 13.5 Over Amateurs

The Professionals proved their worth by winning a hard fought series of matches and prevailing over the Amateurs by a slim one point margin of 14.5 to 13.5.   Shown here with Coach George Hannon, for whom the matches are named, the team is all smiles.  However, as one pop song lyrics say, "You know it don't come easy"

Carrying a one point lead into the final day's singles matches, the professionals built a commanding lead by winning the first three singles matches.  However the amateurs rallied and at the end of the day, it came down to the final match between Omar Uresti and Brian Noonan.  Uresti won that match 2&1 and added the final and winning point to the professional team total.

In the penultimate match between John Paul Hebert and Michael Cooper, who were teammates at the University of Texas, the result was a halved match with each team receiving a half point.  It went to the final hole and had a dramatic finish to set the stage for the last match.

Hebert won the 17th with a birdie to go one up and then hit his tee shot to the right on the difficult par four 18th.  Cooper had driven about three feet into the left rough but had a clear shot to the green while Hebert had to lay up with his second shot short of the water hazard.

Cooper then hit his second shot through the green and had a difficult pitch shot to the back left pin while Hebert put his approach shot to eight feet from the pin.  Cooper, shown here, played his pitch onto the green about ten feet from the cup.

He then made the putt for par and Hebert missed so the match was halved.  At that point the matches were all even at 13.5 points for both teams.

Meanwhile back at the 17th, Uresti was finishing his match with Noonan where it ended on the 17th green with Uresti posting a 2&1 victory.  Noonan and Uresti are shown here shaking hands over a hard fought match and a great day of golf.

In conversation after the matches, it appears that the best golf of the day was played by Rufus Brijalba and Kody King.  Brijalba was reported to be four or five under par but eventually lost to King who posted eight birdies during his 2&1 victory over Brijalba.  Brijalba indicated that King's round included some of the best ball striking he had witnessed.  King said, "I went crazy on him and made a ton of birdies because I had to.  He was playing great."

Congratulations to the Hannon Cup Association, Great Hills Country Club, the PAR rules group and all the players on another successful set of Hannon Cup Matches.
