2011 Morris Williams Spring Mid Amateur – March 26-27

Brian Kennedy fired a tournament record low of 68-68 = 136 to capture the Morris Williams Spring Mid Amateur.  Kody King finished with a pair of 69's at 138 to finish second,  three shots clear of Brett Egge who put together rounds of 69-72 for a total of 141.

Peter McGibney from Ireland represented the Irish in fine fashion with a 72-70 = 142 effort to finish in a tie for fourth with Bubba Sykes who posted 70-72.

Jack Cardwell , Scott Day and Chris Hartenstein all finished at even par 144 in a tie for sixth.   Kenneth Gadawski finished alone in ninth at one over par 145.

Mike Grendle, Adam O'Neal, Phil Thomas, Steve Trafton, Larry Walsh and Teddy Wheeler all tied for 10th at 147.

In addition to the exellent play, the condition of the Morris Williams golf course played a role in the low scoring.  Comments from players indicated that the greens were better than they had ever seen.  The dormant Bermuda tried to force it's way through but the winter rye and poa trivialis combination benefited from the cooler weather and overcame the bermuda grass to provide excellent putting surfaces.

In addition, the fairways and green complexes, benefiting from the on-course watering system,  had just enough grass to avoid the troublesome tight lies for chipping which are normal for this course at this time .  Winds typical of springtime in Austin were present but not overpowering.   All in all scoring conditions were excellent. Congratulations to Jason Chapman, the superintendent  for such great conditioning on the course and a well run tournament.

As usual Beth Cleckler and her team provided a well run golf tournament.  The course was well marked, the volunteer marshals provided help with pace of play, and the logistics of posting scores and tee times was well executed. Thanks to Doug, Matt and all the staff.

The event marked the beginning of the 2011 Austin Amateur Golf points race.  At stake are rankings in the open division, mid-amateur division, senior division, junior division, and womens division for the Austin area.  These rankings provide the basis for the selection of the Rudy's I-35 Cup Team.     For a complete list of the results and current standings in the Austin Amateur Golf Point standings visit Austin Amateur Golf.
