Sometimes Great Golf Overcomes Great Odds

Written by Chip Gist

The Southern Texas PGA hosts a Pro-Pro Match play event each year.  Club Professionals from around the region team up an compete against each other in a single elimination match play format that lasts through September.

Today there was a third round match a Grey Rock Golf Club featuring Barton Creek's Chesley Carr and Matt Smith against Onion Creek Teaching Pro Lonny Alexander and his partner.  The catch is Lonny's partner was not there so Lonny took on Chesley and Matt by himself as is allowed by The Rules of Golf.  Their best ball against his ball.  Now Club Pros know that all 3 of these players are talented and experienced.   Lonny has competed in several PGA Tour events and The National Club Pro Championship as well as winning the STPGA Section Championship.  If anyone has a chance by themselves against Chesley and Matt it would be Lonny.  On the other hand, Ches and Matt have been successful at the Amateur and Club Pro level so the odds were certainly in their favor.  So off they go.  1 against 2, Canadien Doubles on the golf course.

As expected it was a great match.  Matt Smith made a 16 footer on #16 to keep his side in the match.  Chesley Carr birdied #18 to halve the match thru regulation.  Lonny then nearly drives the green on Grey Rock's #18 on the first extra hole and chips within a foot for a birdie and the victory!
