Cha Leads Westlake Girls to Victory In the Don Beaver Invitational

Written by Page Singletary

The Don Beaver Invitational was played at historic Lions Municipal on Thursday, March 8th.  The tournament namesake, Don Beaver, who has coached the Anderson High boy's teams to four state championships and two runner-ups,  is shown here presenting the medalist trophy to Sumin Cha of Westlake, whose career best 74  captured the individual title.  The Austin Statesman ran a nice article on Coach Beaver the day of the tournament and you can read it here: http://bit.ly/xQSe1N

West lake dominated the tournament with Westlake I (Blue) posting a 317 total and Westlake II (Red) posting 336.  They were followed by McNeil at 342 and Anderson at 351. Westlake placed four girls on the All Tournament Team: Sumin Cha (74), Emily Singletary (75), Jasmina Solankee (79), and So Yun Jhang (82).

In this photo is the All Tournament team of Solankee, Cha, Steiner, Singletary, and Jhang.

Assistant Coach Lane Grigg's was extremely busy keeping up with 13 Chap golfers (two varsity teams and one JV team) on an overcast, sometimes windy, sometimes drizzly course. Congratulations to McNeil's MacKenzie Steiner who also made the All Tournament team with a score of 75 and took second place in a scorecard playoff over Singletary.

Westlake Head Coach Nowland is a close friend of Coach Beaver's and was delighted that his girls played so well in his tournament. Nowland attributed some of the good play to the decision to wear blue hats ("They do better in the rain"), as well as to excellent course notes shared with the team the day before the tournament. "When you know putts break towards Lake Austin Boulevard, you save strokes throughout the round." This tournament should help all of these Chap golfers for Districts, to be played at Lions in early April.
