Westlake Takes 1st and 2nd in Girls Play at Lions Municipal

District 15 – 5A Girls Tournament Results

Coach’s Diary: Notes from Chuck Nowland – April 3, 2012

It's official:  the Westlake Chaps girls golf team made it 14 straight district titles today at Lions.  This one, however, was like no other.  Not only did Westlake I win in record setting fashion by shooting a one-under team total of 283 on day two, Westlake II also posted its best team score ever of 301.  In a display of incredible depth and talent, all ten players shot 79 or better on the final day of play.  All our medalists and team players broke the 90 mark with ease today, which is extremely rare and something for all our girls to celebrate.  It's been a TEAM effort all year by each one of our Chap golfers from JV to varsity, and that dedication to a common vision was on display at Lions today.  Well done, Chaps!

  • Westlake I–District Champions  (570)
  • Westlake II–District Runners-up  (610)

Individual results:  In a close, exciting "sisterly" battle, Sierra Sims overtook Mariana Sims with a 4-under par 67 on day two to defend her district title by two strokes (138).  Sims caught fire with 5 birdies in a row starting on #6!  M. Sims 72 (140) secured the 2nd place trophy, while Christine Campbell’s career best 2-under 69 propelled her to the 3rd place medalist finish (143), just two strokes ahead of Robin Tan who also posted her career best of 72 and total (145).Medalist left to right: Christine Campbell (3rd), Sierra Sims (1st), and Mariana Sims (2nd)

Other individual results:

Westlake I:  Claire Wooldridge (78 / 75-matching her career best on day two); Meg Healy (74 / 76 *with eagle on #11!)   Westlake II: Jasmina Solankee (79 / 76–best two-day total); Emily Singletary (76 / 76 *with eagle on #8!); McKenna Wilbur (Day two 77–career best); Sumin Cha (81 / 79)

Medalists:  Angela Jin (84); So Yun Jhang (85); Piper Rickard (87)

It's hard to put into words the pride Coach Grigg and I feel on a day like today.  Thank you all for competing with confidence and joy, for playing the game with maturity and commitment, for accepting the bad breaks with composure and the good ones with grace, for representing your school and our team with a shared sense of purpose and incredible character.

A special shout out to our four senior co-captains who played their last district tournament today (Meg Healy, Mariana Sims, Emily Singletary, and McKenna Wilbur.) We have all appreciated your leadership and we have all learned from the example you set.  Thank you for your devotion and the special talents you bring to our team!

Many thanks also to our parents and fans who marched along with the girls the past two days or followed their progress via my reports. A special thanks to Coach Brent and all the folks at Lions who had a big part in making this a very special district championship tournament!

It will be an honor for Coach Grigg and myself to coach Westlake I and Westlake II in Waco at the Region II Championship Tournament at Cottonwood Creek on April 17-18. We will face stiff competition, but read what Phil Mickelson said of playing the Masters now that he has won it:  "I play now with a sense of excitement versus a feeling of pressure.  Now, I can really enjoy and welcome the challenge."  Let's carry that sense of excitement and anticipation with us as we prepare for our next journey to Waco.  We cannot control what other players or teams do, but we can control the way we physically and mentally prepare for our next challenge in just two weeks.  But that can wait a day…enjoy today.  Enjoy all your accomplishments at Lions!  You deserve it.  Well done, girls!
