Randy Reynolds, Captain of the 2013 Rudy's Cup Team recorded his season low round of 67 at the Bluebonnet Cup to share the lead with Kody King and Steve Paterson. Reynolds recorded four birdies an an eagle along with a single bogey in route to his five under par round.
Reynolds has been the leading force behind the I-35 Rudy's Cup over the last several years and has been playing better throughout the season. The Rudy's Cup has contributed over $200,000 to charities in San Antonio and Austin over the past four years. He has named Steve Hammond as his Assistant Captain and players are competing vigorously for a spot on the Austin Team. The Rudy's Cup will be held at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio in early November.
Kody King fired seven birdies and two bogies in route to his 67. King is the current points leader in the I-35 Rudy's Cup rankings and has been the Austin Amateur Golf Player of the Year for the last two seasons so his good play is no surprise. Shown here with last year's Player of the Year Trophy, he appears on track to secure the title for a third straight year.
Steve Paterson, shown below, won the Chester Cup earlier this year. He has played well but not up to his potential for most of the seaon. As he commented, it hard to play well as a mid-amateur when you are working long hours. Friday's round looked like more of the same for a while. He got of to a slow start in his round with a 38 on the front nine. That included a double bogey on #2, a birdie on #4 and a bogey on 8.
After a couple of routine pars on 10 and 11, he turned it on and played the last seven holes in seven under par. After an eagle on the par 5 12th he birdied 13,14,15, 17 and 18 to record 29 on the back nine. He should have some confidence headed into the second round.
Jerry Thorn recorded five birdies and two bogeys to shoot 69 and is in 4th place.
Peach Reynolds continued his good play, recording two under par 70 along with Matt Fischer, Jeff Shell and Mitchell Griffin. Eric Garza shot 71 to complete the nine players that shot under par in the first round.
The golf course is in excellent shape and over the final 36 holes it will be interesting to see how the scoring goes.
