The 2014 Austin Senior Championship is being played at Morris Williams Golf Course. Since the redesign of the golf course last year it has suffered through record heat and cold that resulted in the course being in poor condition. As a result, it did not play as it was designed to play.
With the recent rains came favorable growing conditions and with some hard work from the city staff, it has rounded into form and is in excellent condition. Players can now see how the design features were intended to play. Virtually all are in agreement the course plays fair and provides an excellent test of golf. Some of the slopes on certain greens which appeared too severe when the greens were in poor condition, now appear to be well designed and fair.
Tournament Results
There are two divisions in this tournament. Seniors and Super Seniors. Seniors are age 50-64. Super seniors are 65+. Players can opt for the se
nior category even if there age exceeds 65.
Gene Black, shown here on the left, combined seven birdies and two bogies to take a two shot lead in the senior division. Mike Allen had six birdies and three bogies to post 69 and Kevin Dahl was another shot back at 70. Three players, including David Bales, Marshall Hinton and Kevin Brady posted 71.
Black, who recently finished 70-70 in the last two rounds of the Bluebonnet Cup is in good form headed into the final round and will likely be difficult to beat. Mike Allen, the 2012 Men’s Senior Champion, shot 68 in the last round of the Bluebonnet Cup so he is also playing well.
Chris Hartenstein, the 2013 Champion, has played very well this year and shot two under par on the front nine. He suffered some mishaps on the back nine to post 73. For example, on the 18th hole, his second shot from 90 yards hit the pin at the base of the flag and bounded back to the the front of the green. So instead of an almost certain birdie, he has to settle for par.
