Strong Field For Harvey Penick Invitational

Tinsley Penick, Noonan, Rod HarrisBrian Noonan will be defending his title as play begins today at Austin Country Club in the 2014 Harvey Penick Invitational Golf Tournament.  The tournament honors Harvey Penick, the long time head professional and teacher at Austin Country Club.  The combination of the traditions of Austin Country Club, the quality of the golf course and club facilities attract a strong field for the event.  Noonan will face strong competition from local mid-amateurs and a field of players from numerous states.

Bob Kearney, who has won the mid-amateur division of this tournament twice and is the defending champion in the senior category, is in the field along with  Ron Kilby, who just won the state senior title at Shady Oaks in Fort Worth.

The 77th Harvey Penick Invitational is this week and it looks like we will have a very strong and deep field in both the mid amateur and senior divisions.  The tournament honors Harvey Penick, the renowned Hall of Fame teaching professional who created the tournament in 1935 and whose association with Austin Country Club spanned 82 years.

Our total field size is 107, with 66 mid-ams and 41 seniors.  We’ll have 46 out-of-state players coming from 19 different states along with two former Walker Cup players, three USGA champions and three runners-up, state level champions from eight different states, as well as qualifiers form every USGA championship.  We’ll have four past Penick champions and six past senior Penick Champions.

In the Mid-Amateur Division, 39 of the 66 players are nationally ranked, and the average handicap will be +1.5 with 57 plus handicappers.  In the Senior Division, 23 of the 41 players are nationally ranked and the average handicap will be 0.2 with 16 plus handicappers.
