The Newport Beach Country Club in Newport Beach, California yielded some good scores and the lead is currently -6, held by Bobby Clampett, Olin Brown, and Bernhard Langer. Kite is one shot back at -5 and is tied with four others. Couples is two back.
Kite and Couples have been playing a few rounds together at Austin Country Club, where they are both members. Kite, who has not played up to his standards recently, is rounding into form and looks to be a contender this week. Couples, whose play has been spotty thus far this season, is capable of shooting low rounds. The weather forecast over the next two days includes the possibility of rain and cooler temperatures.
